Listening to God in Community: Spiritual Direction

Lacy Borgo | The Practice

Lacy Borgo walked us through the holy practice of spiritual direction. “It is a remarkable thing,” she said, “to tend to the presence of Christ in another person.” Lacy shared how spiritual direction helps us to pay attention and lean into God. In direction, we find the sacred in the ordinary.

Lacy guided us through a series of reflections reminiscent of those we might engage with a spiritual director. We listened to God in two texts (Acts 8:26-39 and Luke 24:13-35) and explored a childhood image of God. Lacy helped us engage our imaginations as we drew our reflections in crayon.

Spiritual Direction with Children

Good Dirt Ministries

Good Dirt is the ministry of Lacy Finn Borgo (learn more about me here.) I walk with folks in their life with God through spiritual direction for adults and children, conferences and retreats, and through books, curriculum and articles. It is my desire to do life with the Beloved Gardener and help others to do the same.

Kutsu Companions

A Spiritual Direction session with a child or teenager might look very different from the one with an adult. We will use illustrated images, movement, music, process art, toys, and other manipulatives, such as prayer beads, a lot more than typically with adults.

However different the form might look like, the core remains the same, which is to help the child notice the hand, eye, and voice of God in their lives and respond back to Him. These moments of sacred, unrushed listening, playing, and pondering will nurture a child’s life with God now and help him or her to give meaning to it still in the years to come.

Also, if you are a teacher, youth worker or a children's pastor and are interested in exploring ways of working together in the caring for the souls of the young people that have been entrusted to your leadership, let's connect!

Browse the site for information about my offerings for groups, learn about the prayer tools that I make for families, and read reflections on children's spirituality in my blog.

Finding a Spiritual Director

ESDA | Evangelical Spiritual Directors Association

ESDA spiritual directors are located across the U.S. and Canada and around the world. But if you don’t see a director listed in your immediate area, then consider that many spiritual directors offer their ministries across distance via Skype or phone.

NESD | Network of Evangelical Spiritual Directors

All of the Spiritual Directors listed in our directory affirm the ESDA doctrinal statement and have completed the minimum Spiritual Director 2 year training at an accredited program. All of our Spiritual Directors work with men, women, and adolescents and are trained to be mindful of diverse multicultural concerns and spiritual issues.

transformational listening center

Spiritual direction is the art of listening deeply to another person in such a way that they begin to notice and respond to God’s presence and movement in their life. Spiritual direction can be life giving and transforming for those who participate in this special relationship.

The Transformational Listening Center is a two-year program where participants meet together in the Chicago-land area. The program is a hybrid of onsite and online meetings taking place over a traditional school year schedule.
